As a bit of fun and to celebrate the graduation of a group of former students, I developed this series of animal semblances. Each creature is based on my experiences with and my interpretation of a particular students personality. This was gifted to them as a surprise to celebrate their graduation. Each toy is made from 100% recycled PET plastic felt and was CNC cut on Zund knife tools. As a design exercise this explored the development of a simple tectonic and an applied conceptual logic.
This work is about fun and play and exploration in design and making. Many of these ended up as samples and give aways for Turf Design over several years.
“Toys are not really as innocent as they look. Toys and games are precursors to serious ideas.” – Charles Eames
Developed and built these based on various 2D graphic inspirations and images of the animals themselves.
