Using my design and fabrication skills I developed my engagement ring for my fiancé. Working with a professional jeweler, Robin Woolard out of California, Rhinoceros 3D Modeling was used in conjunction with a Dimension 3D printer to develop the design. The process of the ring’s development was a dialogue between myself and Robin and evolved as he informed my understanding of the process of jewelry design and making. Through this collaboration each design was prototyped and tested for its look, comfort and structure [to prevent loss or damage to the stone]. The final ring was crafted from the final printed model and a clay mock-up which was developed in California and marked the first face to face during the process – the second being the delivery of the finish product in New York City.
For this I did the conceptual design work and learned about the material limitations, both the stone and metal, in developing the piece. Really exciting learning about the goldsmithing craft.
